Sergei Martynov of Belarus set a world record in the men's 50meter rifle prone at the London Olympics on Friday as he won the gold medal he had been looking for at six Olympics. Martynov became the second shooter in Olympic history to score the maximum 600 points in qualification, and went on to score a total of 705.5 points, beating the 12-year-old best mark from Germany's Christian Klees by 0.7. Lionel Cox of Belgium won silver for his first medal at a major competition and Rajmond Debevec of Slovania took bronze.

Mahe Drysdale claimed Olympic rowing gold in the men's single sculls on Friday for New Zealand's second title of the day. Drysdale, who was ill when picking up bronze at the Beijing Games four years ago, was followed across the line by Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic, with Great Britain's Alan Campbell taking bronze.

Britain's Katherine Grainger won an Olympic gold medal at the fourth time of asking on Friday when she stormed to victory in the women's double sculls with partner Anna Watkins in front of 25,000 ecstatic fans on Dorney Lake.

Vijay Kumar qualified for 25m Rapid Fire Pistol finals after scoring an overall score of 585 out of 600.

Ace Indian marksman Joydeep Karmakar has to settle with fourth position in the men's 50m rifle prone after scoring an overall total of 699.1 at the London Olympics on Friday.

New Zealand's Eric Murray and Hamish Bond cruised to a gold medal in the men's Olympic pair on Friday, winning by clear water in the most comprehensive victory at the regatta on Dorney Lake. The New Zealand duo had entered the final as the stand-out favourites after winning the last three world championships and smashing the world best time in their heats.

Germany beat favorite Croatia to win gold in the men's quadruple sculls at the Olympic rowing regatta on Friday. The crew of Karl Schulze, Phillipp Wende, Lauritz Schoof and Tim Grohmann led from start to finish to win in a time of 5:42.48.

Indian athlete, Om Prakash Singh, had his Olympics campaign come to an early end as he failed to qualify for the finals of the men's shot put event at the 2012 London Olympics. Om Prakash Singh finished tenth in Group B with a score of 19.86. The top of six athletes of each group qualified to the finals.

Indian shooter Joydeep Karmakar qualified for the finals of the men's 50m rifle prone shooting event at the 2012 London Olympics with a score of 595. Karmakar was tied in fourth position after the qualification stage and had to go through an impressive shoot-off to cement his position. On the other hand, 10m air rifle bronze medallist, Gagan Narang, failed to qualify for the finals as he finished in 18th position with a disappointing score of 593.

Indian track and field stars will be starting their Olympic campaign today.
